A Glance from Jakarta Fashion and Food Festival 2012

Creativity and Diversity in Muslim Fashion.

At Jakarta Fashion and Food Festival recently (May 23, 2012, in Hotel Harris, Kelapa Gading, Jakarta), four well-known Islamic fashion designers from Indonesia showing off their latest collections in a fashion show as part of the Festival's series. With the show's title "Into The Future", these four designers came up with their own uniqueness in concept and design.

Jeny Tjahyawati came up with her "water inspired" designs dominated by aquatic colour-palette, from blue to aqua green and its gradation. Tuty Adib came with her shiny "cosmic nuance" collection in "atmospheric lights colour-palette such as dark brown and purple, mixed with green, yellow and orange. Dian Pelangi with her signature "youngsters style" collection in tie dye motifs and soft/pastel colours; and, Nuniek Mawardi with her colourful "minimalism-futuristik" designs.

Here are a little peep from the show:

Interesting right? As we know, there are lots of creativities that can be poured into "covered style" fashion... and then they create diversity in Muslimah Fashion.

So, we look forward for more creativities in Muslim Fashion :)
Within Islam's mandate for modesty, the styles are endless...

Rebirth of Chic

Muslimah clothing line

Rebirth of chic is an interesting clothing line from Southern California Muslim designer. I recently stumbled upon an article about it. The designs mainly was inspired by the street fashion.

According to the article on MultiAmerican.scpr.org, Rebirth of Chic's styles go beyond high fashion to what we described as local-girl cool, a punk/skate/reggae blend of Southern California pop subcultures.

These kind of styles usually are very popular amongst young generations. Mostly, I love to see how these "street style" can blend perfectly with Muslimah fashion and then create some kind of "cool" style.. :)

As you can see from the picture below, taken from RebirthofChic's site, I really fell in love with the "cool"-ness of the girl.. :)

Love the design of this tunic and its plaid pattern:

Black-and-red plaid hijab and tunic ensemble with a pair of wide jeans, sneakers, and a skateboard.

Featuring cargo skirt - black and khaki.

I also love the way they combine the black cargo skirt above with a kind of DocMart boots.

Here are some of my favorites from their collection:

This 'made in USA' clothing line is designed by Jamesa Nikiema, a Muslim fashion designer and a pure Southern California Girl.

Read the full story and a video about her here, on the Multi-American: new Southern California's website.

Like a Fairytale: Catherine Middleton's Wedding Dress

British Royal Wedding, April 29th, 2011
Prince William and Ms. Catherine Middleton

Vogue Daily — Catherine Middleton

Vogue Daily — Catherine Middleton

Vogue Daily — Catherine Middleton and her sister, Pippa Middleton

Stunning dress! Simply elegantly beautiful, regal. Love the dress so much... If only I had a chance to wear such beautiful dress like that.. ;) Of course, with a necessary modification to suit the Islamic modesty..

The dress was made by a personal collaboration between the bride and her designer, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

From the official press release:
“The lace applique for the bodice and skirt was handmade by the Royal School of Needlework, with individual flowers hand-cut from lace (in shapes of roses, thistle, daffodils and shamrocks). The dress is made of ivory and white satin gazar with a skirt in the shape of an opening flower. The satin bodice, narrowed at the waist and padded at the hips in a McQueen signature, is based on Victorian corsetry. The back is finished with 58 gazar and organza covered buttons.

The veil, made of ivory silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers, is held in place by a 1936 Cartier tiara, lent to Ms. Middleton by the Queen. (It was bought for her mother by the Duke of York and presented to Queen Elizabeth on her 18th birthday.) Ms. Middleton’s earrings—shaped like oak leaves with a pave set diamond acorn suspended in the center—are by Robinson Pelham. The shoes are also by McQueen.”

On  her head, Catherine wore a Cartier Halo Tiara lent by the Queen. It carried the nuance of simplicity, regalia, and family meaning.

The bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly, and each flower in the bouquet carried a meaning. The flowers' meanings are:
Lily-of-the-valley: Return of happiness
Sweet William: Gallantry
Hyacinth: Constancy of love
Ivy: Fidelity; marriage; wedded love; friendship; affection
Myrtle: the emblem of marriage; love.

Prince William and Princess Catherine

Hope they will live happily ever after..

A bit flashback to the time before the wedding, back in December 2010, some Designers sketched their suggestions for Chaterine Middleton's wedding dress:

Now, we finally find out which designer Princess Chaterine has chosen to collaborate with for her wedding dress... :)

Beyond Fashion

... is the title of an article on VOGUE about BARAKA WOMEN - a clothing line specifically in the cutting-edge maxi clothes, that based in Australia.

I agree with that line..

For us, as a hijabi, 'Fashion' is not only about clothes and creativity or an attempt to look nice and proper.. ^_^ , but we have our 'FAITH' in it... we believe it has rules to follow. We believe the Islamic rules of modesty is our guidelines in life and it's a sign of Alloh's Love to us...

So, we doing 'fashion' with heart full of peace, calmness and happiness, because we believe on what we do... and each of us are trying our best to fulfil it (the Islam's mandate for modesty).

For us, it's truly BEYOND FASHION...

In the world of Fashion, Muslim Fashion slowly had places. People are starting to 'notice', and even adore, the elegance and beauty of hijab and covered style.

Back on April 8th, 2009, VOGUE.COM published Jana of Hijab Style's article. Jana reported back for VOGUE about the Arabian Fashion World event she attended in London. One of the designers that showcased his/her designs was Rabia Z, the amazing hijab fashion designer from UAE.

Jana and her style blog, also Rabia with her clothing line that geared towards Muslim women, had been starting to get more attention in the fashion world by their feature on VOGUE.COM.

I'm so proud of Jana and love the article she wrote for VOGUE; And Rabia Z, with her urban-chic collection, had brought up the Islamic chic-elegance to the International world... :)

BARAKA WOMEN in VOGUE AUSTRALIA MAGAZINE

Now, it's the turn of Kath Fry and Eisha Saleh, the Brains behind BARAKA (means: 'Blessing' in Arabic) WOMEN . They were featured in VOGUE MAGAZINE AUSTRALIA on November 2010.

Here's the image of the article from VOGUE Magazine that Kath sent to me:

(Click once, and then click once again, at the image above to read it in a larger view).

I'm so proud of them too... :)

BARAKA try to fuse the Western Style into Islamic dress code. We already see how the Eastern Style fuse in Islamic rules of modesty, now it's time to see the Western Style go hand in hand with the rules.
There is a need for Islamic clothes that meet religious guidelines of modesty but that are flexible enough to cope with our busy and Western integrated lives.

Part of what makes BARAKA clothing line beautiful is their fusion of Western and Islamic styling.  They are flattering, fashionable and feminine but also simple.
said Eisha, co-founder of BARAKA in exclusive interview on Hijab Trendz, June 15, 2009.

I love the simplicity of Baraka collection and here's some of them that I love:

[Amal+Murad+3.jpg]

What is the inspiration behind your designs?
My main inspiration is our tradition and heritage which I combined with contemporary fashion where I choose only what is suitable for my designs.

Any lines coming up this year? Conceptual sculpture adopts wearable forms that reflect women’s modern lifestyles.

What is your style for 2011? Loose fitting abayas. Creating a luxury retreat, aesthetic in silky jersey qualities and creating maximum drape & exaggerated unstructured silhouettes.

What’s your style tip this year, what’s going to be in?

So beautiful and sophisticated. Simple but in a perfect construction.

And I love how accessories were added. A good choice... a beautiful belt matched with the bag, and a pair of 'bling-bling' shoes. I think this abaya would be perfect for your 'Red Carpet' moment... :)
